FLASH

Our latest assignment was a flash assignment. There are three different methods of flash photography that we experimented with; fill flash, bounce flash, and painting with light.

Fill flash is when you point the flash at the subject and, by change your aperture, make it so that your subject is properly exposed, without the background being over exposed. It's kinda the best of both worlds: your subject visible, but you can still see the background without it being blown out. I had some difficulty mastering this method, but here is my best fill flash photo:

Bounce flash is another method to add light and successfully expose your subject. With bounce flash, you point the flash at a white surface, for example the ceiling, then the light bounces of that surface and reflects light onto your subject. These are some of my favorite bounce flash photos:

Painting with light is by far the most fun of the three methods of flash. To do this, you have to take the photos when it is pitch black out, or in a room with no light. Then, using a VERY long exposure (about 25 seconds!) you cover your flash with a color plastic film, and have your subject do various poses, and you flash the flash at them each time. This creates an image with your subject in it multiple times. It's pretty cool. Also, because it's dark out, you can use glow sticks to add stripes of color and draw shapes and other things.  These are some of my best painting with lights photographs:
