Sunset Flowers

Jennifer!

The last portion of our portraiture unit was to take an environmental portrait. For my environmental photos I took pictures of Jennifer who works at Madison House by University of Virginia. Madison House is non-profit organization that sets UVa students up with volunteer projects that they can partake in around Charlottesville. Because it is a non-profit organization she does a variety of task, from cooking food for student dinners to doing office work. So here are some photos of Jennifer in her place of work!

Letter Love

Another project we did recently in photography class was using a flatbed scanner to scan in compositions that had a coherent theme. I love getting letters in the mail, and my camp friends and I are constantly sending snail mail to each other. So, for my theme I chose to scan in several letters, envelopes, and stamps. These are my top three:

Group Portrait

The last part of our time in the studio was spent taking a group portrait, using the different lighting methods we had learned about. These are my favorite of my group portraits:

Lighting Patterns

Another portion of this unit was to utilize different lighting patterns while in the studio. By using only one soft box, and having the subject angle their head in certain ways, you can achieve a variety of lighting patterns. Here are six different patterns:

Split Lighting
Loop Lighting
Rembrandt Lighting

Short Lighting

Broad Lighting

Butterfly Lighting

Lighting Ratios

The past few weeks we have been doing a portraiture unit in class, and also learning about using studio lights. For this assignment, we were in the studio and took pictures using different lighting ratios. To do this, we had two soft boxes on either side of the subject, and then lowered the power of one by a half stop for each picture. Here are how mine turned out:

1:1
2:1
3:1
4:1
8:1

Snow Day!

Last week we had a snow day, and didn't have any school, so I decided to take the opportunity to photograph some of the snow. Here are how some of my photos turned out!
